    Pramatya Sukarno Putri

    Abstract

Code mixing can be defined as a teaching strategy and it is crucial to know what are the students’ perceptions of the use of it in English class. However, For some levels of students, the teacher has to take control of the use of code mixing in class, the portion to use code mixing should be minimized. So students can get the target language. Therefore, this research aims to to discover the students’ perceptions of the use of code mixing by student teacher in English class. This research involved 36 students of the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Kudus in academic year 2022/2023 in the questionnaire and 6 students for the interview. The researcher used an open-ended questionnaire that to collect the data and strengthened with a semi-structured interview with students in the same class. The result of this research shows that the students have positives perception in cognitive, affective, conative, and also the strenghts and weaknesses aspects. The use of code mixing can give a good impact on upgrading the students’ ability in English learning and increase the students’ knowledge. On the other side, the weaknesses of code mixing used by the student teacher were making students unfamiliar with the use of English phrases which can affect their English skills. The researcher hopes the teacher considers code-mixing as teaching strategy so the students can be helped to get their target language but not be too difficult in understanding the materials. It can be a resolution or a problem-solving in the educational process, especially in teaching and learning English.
